Sony lists Xperia phones due for Jelly Bean update

Sony has released a list of phones due to get the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in a statement. The announcement clarifies the doubts on which Xperia smartphones will get the next Android version, after the recent upgrades across the 2011 and the 2012 ranges of Xperia phones from Android Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.4 version).

According to the update statement, the latest Xperia phones - the Xperia T, TX and V will get Jelly Bean from the middle of Q1 2013, around February.
The slightly older phones, the Xperia Ion, Xperia S, Xperia arco S, Xperia P and Xperia Go will also receive the Jelly Bean upgrade. However, Sony says that the rollout schedule for these phones will be announced “in due course”. This is notable, as the Ice Cream Sandwich rollout earlier this year first covered the 2011 Xperia phones and then covered the newer Xperia S and Xperia U phones. If Sony carries on with the same tradition, then the early-2012 range of Xperia phones should expect the goodness earlier than the very recent launches.
Unfortunately, for those of you using a 2011 range Xperia smartphone, the upgrades will stop with the recently rolled out Ice Cream Sandwich update. Sony says, “We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Apple to receive $10 for every Android phone sold?

We all know that Apple is going all guns blazing in the war against patent infringement (read: Android). Now, as reported by Phone Arena, Kevin Rivette, managing partner at an intellectual property firm called 3LP Advisors LLC has mentioned in a conversation with Bloomberg that if things do go Apple’s way in this patent war, there’s a good chance that they might get $10 for every Android device that has been sold. This figure is close to twice of what Microsoft receives from its licensing deal with Android manufacturers. It seems like Apple is gearing to become foes with a lot of companies in the tech world.

So, what do we think about this? For the love of technology, definitely not good, because these two are fighting like Optimus Prime vs Megatron! We, on the other hand, are peace lovers and have happily installed the MIUI iOS themed ROM on our Android phones.

Samsung Galaxy S III expected in February 2012

As the year comes to an end, it’s time to look forward to 2012 and mobile fanatics will be excited to hear about Samsung’s plans for early next year. Unwiredview is carrying a news that claims Samsung will most likely be launching their next big handset - Galaxy S III in February, this coming year. The hardware likely to power the S III will be a quad-core processor. The last round of rumours claimed that Samsung would use a dual-core processor, like the S II, but one that operates at 1.8 GHz. It’s known that Samsung is already working on a quad-core processor, which will be part of the Exynos series of SoCs. There are other improvements expected as well - a 1280x720 Super AMOLED display and LTE support. It will ship with the latest Android - Ice Cream Sandwich.

There’s more from Samsung. A 3D version of the Galaxy is expected and it’s likely to be called the Galaxy S 3D. A 3D display is likely along with support for 3D video and photo shooting. The 3D fever seems to be hitting mobile phones and Samsung hadn’t jumped onboard the bandwagon. LG was one of the few companies to make the move to 3D phones earlier with their Optimus 3D. A whole bunch of phones will be shown off at MWC 2012 (Mobile World Congress 2012) in early February and Samsung will most definitely show off their new hardware then.

Angry Birds the most downloaded paid app of 2011

Rovio's Angry Birds has been named the most downloaded paid app for the smartphones and tablets in 2011. According to research firm Distimo, Angry Birds was downloaded more than any other application across all major operating systems including Android, iOS, Windows Phone and others. The only platform missing out on the list is BlackBerry. However, the game was recently made available on the BlackBerry's App World.

Angry Birds was followed by Fruit Ninja, while another variant of Angry Birds, Angry Birds Season grabbed the third spot on the list of the paid apps for the year 2011. Among the free apps, Facebook grabbed the top spot, while Pandora Radio followed at the second spot. The free versions of Word with Friends and Angry Birds remained on third and fourth position respectively.

The Distimo report covers data collected from January to November 2011. The report has various notable findings such as Apple App Store has four times more revenue than Google's Android Market. China is rapidly catching up with the US in downloading apps from the Apple App Store. Amazon's Appstore for Android has posted the fastest growth in terms of apps availability. The Windows Phone Marketplace has increased the number of apps by 400 per cent past this year and is the fourth largest app store.

Kindle Fire Hack Installs Ice Cream Sandwich

Amazon's Kindle Fire is not only a great way to access Amazon content, soon it may also be a cheap way to get your hands on a tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Android. JackpotClavin, a hacker on the xda developer forum, has released what is being dubbed as a pre-alpha build of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Kindle Fire. But as the term "pre-alpha" suggests this release is still a little buggy and is really targeted for developers who want to help improve how Google’s operating system works on the Kindle Fire.

Some of the various bugs and issues popping up include a problem with mounting SD cards, and the blog Liliputing says Ice Cream Sandwich on the Fire has problems rendering video. Nevertheless, this latest Fire hack appears to be promising and if the project continues, the $199 Fire could be a better option for a cheap Ice Cream Sandwich tablet than the $99 Novo7.

If you'd like to give ICS on the Fire a try, keep in mind that this release is targeted primarily at developers. If you're feeling daring, you can find ICS for the Fire on this xda thread. JackpotClavin's version of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Fire is based on CyanogenMod 9, according to Liliputing. CyanogenMod is a popular version of Android for people willing to root (gain administrative control) over their devices. The current stable build of CyanogenMod is version 7 based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Ever since Amazon released the Kindle Fire in November, hackers have been hard at work getting the device to run unofficial software. Just two days after Amazon's media tablet started shipping hackers were able to root the Fire. A recently released app called Kindle Fire Utility, a command line interface for the Amazon tablet, can also be used to root your device

Google Helps You Follow Santa with Smartphones and Social Media

Technology is making it easy and fun to follow Santa this Christmas.
Android phones, Twitter, Google, and YouTube are among the tools you can use to keep tabs on the jolly old elf during his travels for Sunday's holiday.

Google Earth and Google Maps

The easiest way to see what Santa's up to is to visit NoradSanta.org where you can see an embedded map of Santa's journey. The North American Aerospace Defense Command says the man in red officially began his annual journey across the globe at 2 a.m. EST time Saturday morning. If you'd rather see Santa in all his glory on Google Earth, click the "Track Santa On Google Earth" button in the bottom right corner of the map. This will prompt you to download the Google Earth Plug-in for your browser (Windows 2000 or higher and Mac OS X 10.5 or higher).

Smartphones

You can easily track Santa from any mobile device equipped with Google Maps, including Android smartphones and tablets, the iPhone, and the iPad. Open up Google Maps on your device and search for "Santa" to see the man in red's most recent location. If you don't have a Google Maps app on your device, point your web browser to m.google.com/maps. Android and iPhone users can also download NORAD's free official Santa tracking app from the App Store or Android Market. Both stores have many Santa-tracking apps, so make sure you get the official version called NORAD Tracks Santa by Visionbox. The app updates with Santa's current location and you can also play a game called Elf Toss where you try to help the elves load Santa's sleigh in time for Christmas Eve.

Social Media
One of the fastest ways to keep tabs on Santa is through NORAD's official Track Santa Twitter feed providing constant updates of Santa's location and links to the latest videos recording his journey. You can also find NORAD tracking Santa on Facebook, Google+, and Santa's latest videos for 2011 on NoradSanta.org or NORAD Tracks Santa page on YouTube. Just like last year, you can also visit SendACallFromSanta.com to send a personalized holiday greeting from Santa to any phone number in North America. And you can have the kids call Santa's Google Voice number at 1-855-34-SANTA (72682) to leave a voicemail for the man in red. Santa's sleigh, dubbed Santa One, was recently cleared to fly over American skies at an altitude of 50,000 feet.

Tracking Santa Through the Years
The annual tradition of using military technology to track Santa was born in the 1950s.
A newspaper ad that was intended to publish a special telephone number for calling Santa on Christmas Eve instead printed the direct number for the commander-in-chief of Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), the predecessor to NORAD. As calls started pouring in to CONAD that night, Director of Operations Colonel Harry Shloup did not disappoint the young callers and had his staff check the radar for signs of Kris Kringle's sleigh.

Samsung will announce Windows 8 tablet next week

Korean electronics giant, Samsung has partnered with Microsoft to launch the first tablet running Windows 8 OS. This announcement should take place during Microsoft’s developers’ conference in California next week. Android tablets aren’t exactly flying off the shelves, which is primarily due to the limitations of Honeycomb. So, it makes sense to expand one's product base with a different OS, which is exactly what Samsung is trying to do. Who knows, maybe Windows 8 could be the next best thing after iOS in the tablet world.

We still don’t know anything about what the tablet will look like or its specifications, but I think it’s safe to assume it won’t be far off from their current offerings. With Apple harrowing Samsung at every turn with lawsuits, it’s not a bad idea to plan for the future. Being a Windows-based tablet, we should be able to expect certain things like a USB port, more than 1GB RAM and possibly HDMI. Samsung may just go with their Super AMOLED Plus screens like the ones used on the Note. The conference will be held from the 13th to the 16th of September, this year. So, I guess we wait till then for more news to pour in.

Creative Launch Affordable Wireless Speaker

Speakers don't always have to be large, cumbersome, and boring to look at. Creative Technology Ltd seems to have taken note of this as they announced the D80 Bluetooth wireless one-piece portable speaker, which comes in four colours.

This speaker can play from any stereo Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR source compatible with A2DP/AVRCP profile such as the iPhone, BlackBerry, Android phones, tablet computers, and laptops. The Bluetooth Connect button present on the speaker lets you instantly it with the source without any hassle, and you can use the same to toggle between pre-paired sources. Support for AVRCP profile means that you can control speaker volume through compatible source devices. There is also an auxiliary input to connect other audio devices. With no obstructions such as walls, the speaker can be placed at a distance of up to 10 m from the source. It has two 3" full range drivers, which claim to produce full, dynamic audio.  The D80 weighs just 1.06 kg and has dimensions 32.5x10x10 cm.

Ernest Sim, Regional Sales Manager for Indian Subcontinent at Creative said, "Most people today store their music in portable Bluetooth enabled devices like the iPhone, Android phone, Blackberry or tablet computers like the iPad or Creative ZiiO, and the Creative D80 is designed to be the perfect compact Bluetooth speaker to go with these wireless devices. First Android Honeycomb 3.2 Tablet By Huawei

Manufacturer Huawei claims the title for the first Android Honeycomb 3.2 tablet, with its 7-inch MediaPad announced on Monday. The tablet runs version 3.2 of Google's Android operating system for tablets, which is essentially the same version found on Motorola's 10-inch tablet, but tailored to the 7-inch screen of the MediaPad.

The MediaPad is expected to ship in Q3 in the U.S., but Huaweit offers no availability date or pricing. The tablet runs on a 1.2GHz processor and Huawei claims you can squeeze out six hours of battery life, which is still around four hours less than market leader, Apple's iPad. Huawei's tablet will be more in line with HTC's Flyer tablet, which runs on non-tablet optimized version of Android.

The MediaPad is lighter than an iPad, coming in at 0.86 pounds, but it's slightly thicker at 0.4 inches, versus the iPad's 0.34-inches. Huawei's tablet also features dual cameras, one 5MP lens at the rear, which can record HD video (but no mention on whether it's 720p or 1080p), and a 1.3MP sensor on the front for self-portraits and video calls.

Along with 3G (HSPA+) and Wi-Fi support, the MediaPad can play 1080p videos and offers 8GB of internal storage, as well as microSD (up to 32GB) and HDMI slots. Huawei promises Flash Player 10.3 will be on board at launch, together with preloaded Facebook, Twitter, and Documents To Go apps, and the Let's Golf game.

When the MediaPad hits the U.S. shores this fall, the tablet will be likely sold though carriers at a subsidized price (but tied to a monthly data contract), as Engadget reports Huawei has no plans to release a Wi-Fi-only model of its Honeycomb 3.2 tablet.

Facebook Inside Xperia for the X10

That your Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will be getting a Gingerbread update is not surprising. However, the update is also said to be bringing the “Facebook inside Xperia” feature to the handset.

From what the Mobile Indian has to say, a certain Sony Ericsson spokesperson said that the Gingerbread update will be arriving to handsets in India, but they didn’t have an idea about the timing of the launch. What we know is that the update should be launching at the end of this month or maybe beginning of July. A few days back we saw SE releasing the “Facebook inside Xperia” feature for the Xperia Play and the Xperia Arc. If these features make it to the X10, that’ll just add to the happiness to the X10 users, as well.

These small progresses definitely are going to earn Sony Ericsson those brownie points that they have been in need of for a while now. Let’s just wish that there’s no change of plans or anything of that sort.

OpenPlug Studio now available for free

There is a good news for RIA / mobile developers, OpenPlug Studio is now available for free for all. OpenPlug Studio allows Flex developers to reuse their development skill, and existing code in developing applications for the mobile using ActionScript3, MXML, and web development languages such as HTML, JavaScript, CSS etc, and offers an alternative to the Flash Builder IDE.

Earlier a free version of the application has been available, but added advertisements into the application. Now instead the development tool itself is available for free, and instead "PRO" and "PREMIUM" support tiers are available for those that need it.

While this will also be possible with the latest Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex SDK 4.5, Flash Builder and OpenPlug have different ways of running the code on the target device.

While Adobe's answer to creating applications that run across platforms is to bring their Flash and AIR runtimes to each platform they plan to support, OpenPlug goes another way. OpenPlug takes the code you write in ActionScript3 and MXML and compiles it for the platform you want to run your code on, producing a native application for each platform.

OpenPlug extends the APIs available in Flex adding support for more mobile APIs with each new release. With OpenPlug native applications can be developed for the following platforms, iOS, Windows Mobile, Android, and Symbian. Since it uses a modified Flex SDK, it is possible for developers to use some of their existing Flex application code (the core bits, not the UI), as a base for developing a mobile version. OpenPlug applications can also be extended using native code components. So one can write native code in C, Objective-C, or Java that can gain better access to the systems, allowing existing code to be reused without losing the unique advantage each platform allows.

OpenPlug itself is an Eclipse-based IDE that runs on Windows and Mac OSX, like the Flash Builder IDE, and can in fact even be installed as a plug-in to Flash Builder rather than a standalone application.
OpenPlug has a number of advantages over Flash Builder for those wanting to create mobile applications using Flex code, such as being free, supporting native UI components, native extensions and not requiring any additional runtimes.

You can find out more about OpenPlug on their site, and can download a copy after registering for a free account on their site.

Android Devices to Get Video Chat Via Gtalk

Google's announced that it's going to start rolling out Google Talk for video chat for Android devices. Android users will be able to voice and video chat with other Android users using Google Talk over 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi. Google says that this feature will be available for Nexus S users over the next few weeks with the next over the air OS update. Video talk will be on other Android 2.3 and higher devices soon.

After the update comes through, on your Google Talk list of contacts on your Android device, you will see a video and a voice icon next to each contact. As is obvious, you just need to touch the button for the feature you want and chat away. Video chat can be placed on 'hold' while audio chats can go on if you need to multitask on your device. During a voice or a video chat, text chats from the contact you're chatting (over video or audio) with will overlay on the video/audio chat.

So far, this service, much in the style of FaceTime, is restricted to Android to Android devices. We're hoping that Android goes the way of Skype though, and opens up the video chat goodies to various other operating systems.

LG Optimus Me P350 Creeps into India

We told you about LG launching the Optimus Me way back in January, and it now looks like the phone has stealthily made its way into India, what with the LG India website listing it along with an official price. The launch has been made without much fanfare, a stark contrast to when the LG Optimus 2X and Optimus Black made it here.

The Optimus Me looks to entice those looking for a smartphone on a rather stringent budget. Check out the specs below:

  • 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen at 240x320
  • 600MHz processor
  • Google Android 2.2 FroYo
  • 3G and HSDPA 3.6Mbps connectivity
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP + EDR
  • 3.15 megapixel camera with Autofocus and Geotagging
  • Stereo FM with RDS
  • GPS with A-GPS support
  • 1250mAh battery
  • Storage expansion upto 32GB via microSD slot

As you can see, this phone isn't really going to give the LG Optimus 3D a run for its money, but it will be a decent option for quite a few people. While we’re not sure when exactly the Optimus Me P350 will be available in stores across the country, we’re fairly certain it’s going to be very soon. According to the LG website, the Optimus Me is going to be priced at an MRP of Rs. 8,999.

fring Announces Group Video Chat for Android and iPhone

Mobile communication service provider, fring announced today, the world’s first mobile group video calls for iPhone & Android devices. The app once installed on your device allows for up to four friends to engage in voice and video calls via Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G. fring uses proprietary DVQ technology, that delivers the highest quality video for all four participants.

According to Avi Shechter, Co-Founder & CEO of fring, ‘fring leap-frogs sluggish, expensive PC Group Video Calling solutions by giving users the world’s 1st mobile Group Video service, free. There is no reason why users need to run home to their PC in order to have a ‘spontaneous’ video call with their friends and family. Users love seeing all their friends at the same time, on one screen, but want to be able to do it, when and where they want. Just as fring was the 1st to liberate video calls from the PC back in 2009, we are the 1st to give users the ability to see all their friends on their phone at the same time, anywhere. This video call revolution lets fringsters be free to get together, wherever.

G'Five to bring low-cost Android smarpthones and tablets

It was back in January when G’Five introduced 21 mobiles that we got an inkling it would be bringing low-cost Android tablets and netbooks to the country, with some basic devices present at the launch. Now, various reports over the past week confirm that G’Five will also be bringing entry-level and mid-range Android phones to the country.

Jaideep Chopra, VP of G'Five, spoke to the Mobile Indian about the upcoming devices, saying: “We will enter the Android smartphone space with multiple devices with different hardware options, but all phones will be based on Android 2.1 version.” With Android 2.1 onboard, G’Five might not even be able to capture the extreme low-end of the market, with Huawei already offering Froyo phones for peanuts, and other major manufacturers like LG and Samsung strong in the entry-level segment. Of course, Spice, Videocon and Micromax and their low-end devices have also to be reckoned with.

As for tablets, a 7-inch device is expected, with a capacitive touchscreen and an 800MHz processor, priced at around Rs. 13,000.

Skyfire Announces Skyfire Web Browser 4.0 for Android

We saw a couple of mobile web browsers launching last month like the Opera Mini and Mozilla’s Firefox for Android. It looks like Skyfire wants to up the ante by launching the fourth iteration of their Skyfire Web Browser. And like every new version of a software or app, the Skyfire Web Browser has some features added.

Primarily, the browser seems to cater users who are constantly stuck to their Facebook or Twitter accounts. There are one touch access buttons for quick access to Twitter, plus there’s also a Facebook Like button added for users’ convenience to like a particular page. Skyfire’s toolbar, the Skybar has been made customizable and is also scrollable.

Other added features include the Google Reader option that aggregates content from various websites that a user has selected. Three new buttons are the Sports, News and Finance buttons that is supposed to give one touch access to the latest events happening around the globe.

There’s not much mentioned about any improvement in the speeds of the browser, but the added features look pretty cool. The browser is free of cost and is available for download at the Android Market.

Sony Ericsson W8: First Walkman Android Phone

Sony Ericsson has announced its first ever Walkman brand smartphone running Google Android 2.1 Eclair update in Indonesia. Sporting 3-inch capacitive touchscreen display, the new Sony Ericsson W8 walkman smartphone looks very similar to Xperia X8. There's no word on the pricing and this phone will be available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malayasia, Phillipines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam from Q2 2011 in Azure Blue, Metallic Red and Iconic Orange.

New Sony Ericsson W8 has a 3-inch capacitive HVGA (320x480) display and houses 600Mhz processor under the hood. With 128MB memory on board, this handset comes with Android 2.1 Eclair running on it and I doubt if it will get Froyo richness. Kindly forget about the phone getting Gingerbread. Sony Ericsson has layered the Timescape UI on the top of Android.

Branded as a Walkman series smartphone, the W8 will have Walkman Music Player ported to Android, TrackID music recognition, and PlayNow technologies. At the back lies a 3.2 megapixel camera that would give you mediocre quality photos along with Geo-tagging capability.

Being 3G Network compatible, the new W8 Android phone offers 23 hours and 40 minutes worth of music listening time. The phone is connectible wirelessly via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Apart from that, the W8 offers Twitter and Facebook integration in the Timescape UI.

Sounds like a good contender for sub Rs. 10,000 Android based smartphone, the Sony Ericsson W8 does look a bit tacky in Iconic Orange, may be its just me.

Micromax A70 Android Phone Surfaces

Micromax launched a budget Android phone - Andro A60 about three months ago. Now, the company is said to be ready for the launch of Andro A60 successor Micromax A70, as spotted on GSMArena. New Micromax A70 will run Android 2.2 Froyo update. Apparently, this would be a 3G friendly offering from the company and is expected to arrive at a price of about Rs. 7,999.

Though Micromax hasn't announced or hinted about the new A70 smartphone, we believe its launch could take place anytime in the coming weeks. Physically, the new A70 looks like a mashup of Google Nexus One and HTC Desire smartphones.

Micromax A70 will have 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen display which is resistive by nature and could be a bit tacky to use. The A70 will have Android 2.2 running comfortably. There's no word on the internal memory as yet. The A70 will support 3G and will also offer Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP connectivity.

At the rear lies a 5 megapixel autofocus camera and in the front rests a VGA camera for video call and chat.

Skype Fixes Security Loophole

A few days ago, we reported about the security risks that Skype users faced with their personal data. Apparently, the data that Skype users often stored locally on their Android devices was at risk, if they downloaded malicious third party apps.

Looking at the crucial nature of the problem, Skype got down to work soon after and has now, come up with a fix in the latest version of the Android app. The app now blocks any third party, malicious application from gaining access into the user’s private data. In addition to this, Skype now, also enables 3G calling as against its previous feature where VOIP calls could made solely using Wi-Fi connections over Skype servers.

iOS users may be familiar with this feature introduced by Skype, since for them it was available a year ago. However, it is only now that Android users are being provided with the facility.
