It's time for yet another Google Doodle and this time it's in celebration of Earth Day. The day we're supposed to be aware and appreciate the planet. Earth Day has actually gained much political support since the first Earth Day in 1970 in the United States when a senator in Wisconsin called for an environmental teach-in. Senator Nelson got the idea for Earth Day when he saw an oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara in 1969 and wanted to raise awareness of the effects such man-made disasters can have on ecosystems. Thousands of organizations joined in and supported that first Earth Day with events taking place in New York City and Philadelphia. The 20th and 30th anniversaries of Earth Day mobilized the caused to countries around the world and the United Nations has since designated April 22nd as Earth Day.
The Doodle represents a cross cultural garden where all the plants and animals get along in a form of symbiosis. The image starts out with China on the left with pandas and bamoboos. It traverses onto the African jungle with thick trunked trees, a bird that flies out of the tree and a lion, goes over to Antarctica where the penguin jumps into a waterfall, the Australian country with a koala in a tree and finally onto a temperate deciduous forest. The doodle indicates a perfect harmony of ecosystems if left untouched and the need for preservation action for these environments.
